Term: Disconnected Layers

Disconnected layers are hair layers created with a freehand style rather than the traditional layers. Disconnected layers are usually created on the hair with a razor rather than a scissors. In some cases disconnected layers might first he sculpted with a scissors and then finished along the edges and ends with a razor. The create the disconnected layers the hair is cut individually in sections and are cut at angles to create unique and isolated layers.

The ultimate goal of disconnected layers is to create lots of edge and movement. The hair, when cut properly, appears to be in perpetual motion and moves with the person wearing the hairstyle. Cheryl Burke, one of the professional dancers on Dancing With The Stars was famous in the initial seasons of the show for her disconnected bob hairstyle with lots of isolated layers. The overall effect is a hairstyle with a lot of movement and texture in the style.

Traditional layers are cut with precision with a uniform shape and with a traditional hair cutting guide.

One danger with disconnected layering is when there is a lack of defined silhouette or profile and hair is chopped and razored without a definite balanced design.
